Local SEO for Alberta businesses, without the jargon

The handful of things that actually move local search rankings for a small business, in the order worth doing them.

Most local SEO advice is either obvious or wrong. The obvious part is real work though, and most small businesses have not done it. Here is the short list, in the order it is worth doing.

1. Google Business Profile, properly filled in

This is the single highest-leverage thing a local business can do, it is free, and most people set it up once and never touch it again.

Fill in every field. Correct categories, service areas, hours including holiday hours, phone number, and photographs that are not stock images. Post updates occasionally. Respond to every review, including the bad ones, briefly and without arguing.

The map pack sits above the normal results for most local searches. Ranking there is often worth more than ranking first in the blue links below it.

2. Be consistent about your name, address and phone number

Search engines cross-reference your details across directories. If your phone number appears three different ways across your site, your Business Profile and an old listing somewhere, that inconsistency is a small negative signal.

Pick one format and use it everywhere, including the punctuation.

3. Have a page for each thing you actually do

A single “Services” page listing eight services will not rank for any of them. Eight pages, each properly written about one service, can rank for eight different searches.

This is the most common structural mistake we see. It costs nothing but writing time, and it is why our own site has a page per service rather than one list.

4. Answer the questions people actually ask

The searches that convert are questions: what does this cost, do you serve my town, how long does it take, do you do X. Pages that answer those directly tend to rank because they match the intent exactly.

This is also why an FAQ section is worth having. Not for the keywords, but because the questions are the searches.

5. Be fast, especially on phones

Most local searches happen on a phone, often on a bad connection. A site that takes four seconds to load loses people before it ever gets the chance to rank badly.

Speed is a ranking factor, but the bigger effect is that slow sites lose the visitor regardless of position.

6. Get reviews, then leave them alone

Ask satisfied customers directly. Do not offer incentives, do not write them yourself, and do not use a service that generates them. Fake reviews are easy to detect and the penalty is worse than having few.

A steady trickle of genuine reviews beats a burst of twenty in one week, which looks exactly like what it is.

What does not matter as much as you have been told

Keyword density. Write for people. Search engines got good at language a long time ago.

Meta keywords. Ignored since roughly 2009.

Blogging constantly. Publishing weekly filler is worse than publishing four genuinely useful pages a year. One good page that answers a real question will outperform fifty that do not.

Buying links. At best wasted money, at worst an actual penalty.

Submitting to hundreds of directories. A handful of relevant Canadian ones help. The rest is noise sold as a service.

How long does it take?

For a new domain, expect months rather than weeks before anything meaningful happens. Google needs to crawl the site, decide it is trustworthy, and start testing it in results.

Anyone promising first-page rankings in thirty days is either targeting searches nobody makes, or lying.

The realistic order

If you do nothing else, do the first three: Business Profile, consistent details, a page per service. That is most of the available benefit for most small businesses, and none of it requires paying anyone monthly.

If you want the technical groundwork done properly as part of a build, that is included in what we do rather than sold separately.
